Sierra No. 3, a steam locomotive built in 1891 and most recently renovated in 2010, is famously known as the “Movie Star Locomotive” for having starred in over 80 motion pictures, documentaries, and television productions. Its movie list includes the 1920 movie The Terror, starring Hollywood’s first Western star Tom Mix, the 1952 Academy Award Winning movie High Noon, starring Gary Cooper, 1990’s hugely successful Back to the Future III with Michael J Fox, and Clint Eastwood’s 1992 Academy Award Winning movie Unforgiven. Sierra No. 3 continues to operate at the Railtown 1897 State Historic Park in Jamestown, CA.

Artist and illustrator Alfred Waud was one of only two individuals to generate visual first-hand records of the events of the Battle of Gettysburg. Hired by the newspaper, Waud traveled exclusively with the Union’s Army of the Potomac throughout the Civil War from 1861 thru 1865, recording with his sketches the daily life and exploits of its soldiers. His sketches were couriered to the newspaper where artists would generate woodblock engravings for use in the printing presses.

When people ask me to describe how I learned to do what I do, I first tell them that I have been so very blessed to have crossed paths in my life with some of the very best. To name just a few, Marlene Dotur and Ellen Jefferies, Charlene Dambacher and Charlie Clyde, to Kirby Lockard, Chuck Albanese and Mike Doyle, these individuals were all incredibly influential teachers and even better people. They taught me to view things from different perspectives, to challenge myself, and to take pride in my craft.

The drawings themselves are just white space “between the lines”. Upon closer inspection, it is about capturing the white of the canvas, crafting its presence adjacent to the next. Fundamentally, darker areas recede, brighter areas come forward. It is about pushing and pulling the white of the canvas.
